Derby County defender Andre Wisdom is recovering in hospital after being stabbed and robbed in Liverpool.
The 27-year-old, who came through the academy at Liverpool, was attacked in Toxteth after getting out of his car as he visited a relative, as first reported by The Sun.
The incident occurred hours after Wisdom had featured for Derby on Saturday in a 2-1 victory over Championship rivals Reading.
He is understood to be in a stable condition in hospital and expected to make a full recovery.
A Derby County statement said: “Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.
“He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital.”
Merseyside police are investigating the attack.
It is hoped Wisdom will be released from hospital later this week but it is unclear when he will be able to return to action.
A source told The Sun: “It’s awful news. He must have been on a high after his team played so well.
“To then have something like this happen is just tragic. It was totally unprovoked.
“It’s impossible to imagine what his family must be going through.
“All his fans wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully he’ll be back on the pitch again soon.”
Ally McCoist says Liverpool’s title win either shouldn’t come with an asterisk, or it should have TWO!
Wisdom made 22 senior appearances for Liverpool after leaving Bradford to join the Premier League club’s youth ranks before having several loan spells away from the club.
He signed on a permanent deal with Derby in 2017 and has made 20 appearances for the Rams this season as they sit three points outside the Championship play-off places.
